THE IMPORTANCE OF An AC System Evacuate and Recharge

What is an AC system evacuate and recharge and how does it work?

The air conditioning (AC) system in your vehicle relies on a special compound called refrigerant that readily absorbs heat from the environment and helps the system to provide cool air to you and your passengers. The refrigerant can function in both a gaseous and liquid state. In fact, depending on what part of the system the refrigerant is occupying at any given moment, it will be one or the other.

An AC system evacuate and recharge is a two-stage procedure aimed at allowing a technician to service AC components. It is illegal to vent refrigerants into the atmosphere. Therefore, a specially trained and certified technician must follow certain procedures and use special equipment to perform an AC system evacuation and recharge.

During the procedure, refrigerant is removed from your AC system and captured in an approved container or machine. Once repairs to the system have been completed, refrigerant is added back (recharged) to the system.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs an AC system evacuate and recharge?

Your AC system needs to be evacuated and recharged any time that refrigerant might escape when system components are replaced. For instance, if an AC compressor is bad, if a line is kinked, or if the condenser is damaged, an AC system evacuate and recharge service must be performed. You will know of problems with your AC system if you notice any of the following:

The air coming from the vents is not cold when the AC is engaged

The AC compressor clutch does not engage

The AC light blinks on the dashboard

How does a technician perform An AC System Evacuate and Recharge ?

To evacuate and recharge the AC system in your vehicle, a technician will perform the following steps:

  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery
  • Connect an AC recovery machine to the high and low pressure service ports
  • Use the machine to apply a vacuum to the system to extract all of the refrigerant and capture it in an approved container
  • With the system evacuated, complete repairs and/or component replacement
  • Using the AC machine, evacuate the system of all air and moisture
  • Allow the system to remain under vacuum for up to 30 minutes
  • Charge the system with an amount of refrigerant and oil specific to your vehicle
  • Start your engine and test the system to verify the repair

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

Do you have to evacuate the air conditioning system before recharging?
Yes. Evacuating an AC system before recharging is necessary. Evacuation draws out all of the air and moisture from the system under vacuum. This serves to prevent corrosion and creates the space necessary in the system for the fresh refrigerant to enter. Evacuation can also help a technician to check for leaks.
Do you have to evacuate the AC system to change the compressor?
In order to replace an AC compressor, the lines leading to and from the component must be removed. If the system is not evacuated first, refrigerant would escape into the atmosphere. Not only is that damaging to the environment, it is illegal. And because the refrigerant is under pressure, it can also be dangerous.
Does evacuating an AC system remove the oil?
AC system evacuation does not remove the compressor oil. On the other hand, any components that are disconnected and removed can allow oil to leak out. And if those components are replaced, the amount of residual oil inside them will be reduced from the system.
