What is an air injection hose and how does it work?

An air injection hose is part of the emission control system on a vehicle.

The secondary air injection system (sometimes referred to simply as the air pump system) is designed to lower tailpipe emissions from a vehicle by pumping fresh air into the exhaust pipe. The air enters the exhaust system just after the exhaust gasses are expelled from the engine. Fresh air introduced into the exhaust increases the oxygen level and allows any unburnt fuel to be burned inside the exhaust pipe prior to release into the atmosphere. This extra combustion step reduces hydrocarbon emissions. It also increases the heat inside the catalytic converter(s) right after startup, thereby allowing them to work more efficiently.

There are typically two air injection hoses, one that connects the air intake to the air pump, and another that connects the pump to a check valve.

How do I know if my vehicle needs an air injection hose replacement?

Your vehicle might need a new air injection hose if you notice one or more of the following signs:

How does a technician perform An Air Injection Hose Replacement ?

To replace an air pump hose, a technician will likely take the following steps:



  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to cut power to the vehicle
  • Remove any heat shields, guards, or other components blocking access to the hose
  • Loosen the hose at each end and remove any mounting clamps
  • Dislodge the hose and remove it from the vehicle
  • Insert the new hose and attach the mounting clamp(s) or connectors
  • Reinstall any components removed for access to the hose
  • Reconnect the battery
  • Verify the repair by starting the vehicle and leak-testing the new hose and associated connections
  • Clear the trouble codes with a scan tool

What happens when the secondary air pump goes bad?
When the secondary air pump goes bad, fresh air will no longer be pumped into the exhaust system on startup. This will cause more unburnt fuel to be expelled from the tailpipe, which will most likely cause the vehicle to fail emissions testing. It may also illuminate a check engine light, and catalytic converter damage can occur over time.
Can you drive with a bad secondary air system?
Normally, the vehicle will still run and drive with a bad secondary air injection system. However, the check engine light might come on, and there may be a loss of engine power. On certain models, the electronic control module (engine computer) will place the vehicle in "limp mode" and only allow partial throttle operation if the secondary air system is not working properly.
What causes a secondary air injection system malfunction?
If the secondary air injection system fails, the usual culprit is a bad air pump. Moisture can damage the pump, as can dirt and debris if the filter is not working properly. Occasionally, the system will fail due to an air leak caused by deteriorated hoses.
