THE IMPORTANCE OF A Clutch Disc Replacement

What is a clutch disc and how does it work?

A clutch disc is a component of the clutch assembly in a manual transmission system. In order to effectively switch between gears in your manual transmission, it is necessary to momentarily disengage the transmission from the engine. Otherwise, your vehicle would be in motion anytime the engine was running. The clutch is the connection between the engine and the transmission and can be alternately engaged and disengaged.

The way the clutch works is through friction between the engine flywheel and the clutch disc. The flywheel is connected to the engine crankshaft and spins with the engine. The clutch disc is connected to the input shaft of the transmission. The disc is coated with a sacrificial friction material that causes it to grab hold of the surface of the flywheel when pressed against it by the clutch pressure plate. This is the case under normal operating conditions with the clutch engaged. Since the transmission input shaft is connected to the clutch disc, the shaft turns along with the engine.

When you press the clutch pedal, tension from the pressure plate is relieved, and the clutch disc is freed from the flywheel. In this condition, the engine spins independently of the transmission so that you can select a different gear.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs a new clutch disc?

There are several signs that your clutch assembly needs attention. When the clutch is serviced, it is common for a technician to replace all related components, including the pilot bearing, pressure plate, release bearing, and clutch disc. When these components wear out or fail, you might notice one or more of the following symptoms:

Your engine seems to “run away” or rev up when you press the accelerator pedal without an increase in vehicle speed

The clutch pedal is unusually easy to press

You experience difficulty shifting between gears or from neutral into a selected gear

You hear grinding noises when shifting gears

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform A Clutch Disc Replacement ?

Most technicians will advise that all of the components of a clutch assembly should be replaced at the same time. This is for a couple of reasons. First of all, the time that it takes to replace one of the components of a clutch is essentially the same for replacement of the entire assembly. It is also likely that, if one component is worn, the other components are in a similar condition. Therefore, it is common to replace the pressure plate, pilot bearing, and release bearing along with the clutch disc.

To replace a clutch disc, a technician must first safely lift and support your vehicle in the air for access. From there, a typical clutch assembly replacement consists of the following:

  • Removal of the driveshaft(s) and transfer case (if so equipped)
  • Removal of the clutch slave cylinder and/or clutch linkage
  • Unbolting and removing the transmission from the vehicle
  • Disassembly of the clutch assembly to remove and replace the clutch disc and other components
  • Reinstallation of the transmission, linkage, slave cylinder, and other components
  • In the case of a hydraulic clutch, the hydraulic fluid must be replaced and the system may need to be bled of any air in the fluid. Special alignment tools and procedures may also be required to properly reassemble and install the clutch assembly into the transmission.

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

How does a clutch burn out?
Clutches burn out when they are overheated from improper use or abuse. If a vehicle is loaded beyond its GVWR or is pulling more than its rated towing capacity, or if the driver does not engage and disengage the clutch quickly enough (also called "riding the clutch") this can cause the clutch to overheat and burn out. Frequent stop-and-go driving can also be hard on the clutch assembly.
How many miles should a clutch last?
How long a clutch should last varies greatly based on the habits of the driver. Some drivers are able to get 100K miles or more out of a clutch. Others, however, may find that they need a new clutch every 20K-30K miles.
Can I replace a clutch myself?
The procedure to replace a clutch assembly is a lengthy and relatively complex process. Not only does it involve safely lifting and supporting your vehicle in the air for access, but it also requires removal of the transmission or transaxle from the vehicle to access the clutch assembly. This is not an operation that should be undertaken by anyone who does not have significant experience and should be done by a qualified technician.
