What is an EGR valve temperature sensor and how does it work?

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system is an emissions control system that takes some of the exhaust gases from your engine’s exhaust manifold and recirculates them back into the engine through the intake manifold. The exhaust gases are then drawn into the engine and combined with fresh air and fuel entering the cylinders. The system helps your engine to run more efficiently, consume less fuel, and put out fewer emissions.

At the heart of the emissions system is the EGR valve, and central to its operation is the EGR valve temperature sensor that lets the valve know when to open and close.

An EGR valve temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the gases flowing from the EGR valve during engine operation. The information it receives is sent to the engine’s computer, the ECM (Engine Control Module) where it is used to determine how much to open or close the EGR valve in order to produce the right amount of gas flow for a given condition.


How do I know if my vehicle needs a new EGR valve temperature sensor?

The job of the EGR valve temperature sensor is to report the temperature of EGR system combustion gases back to the Engine Control Module to assist in determining the proper EGR gas flow rate at any given time or engine condition. These gases can be in the neighborhood of two thousand degrees Fahrenheit. They can also carry harsh chemicals that form a corrosive condensate on any and all EGR components.

How is a an EGR Valve Temperature Sensor Replacement done?

The EGR valve temperature sensor is usually mounted near the EGR valve. In order to replace the sensor, a technician will first disconnect your vehicle’s battery, taking care to preserve the sensitive computer memory (and your audio settings). Any shields, guards, covers, or ducts that are in the way of access to the sensor must be removed. From there, the procedure is generally straightforward and includes the following steps:

  • Disconnect the wires attached to the sensor
  • Unscrew the sensor from its mount and replace it with a new one
  • Reconnect the wiring
  • Reinstall any shields, guards, covers, or ducts that were removed
  • Run an EGR Function test with a scan-tool to verify the system is working correctly

Does EGR affect engine performance?
EGR directly affects engine performance. It changes the amount of oxygen that enters the combustion chamber with each intake stroke of the piston. EGR has a noticeable effect on gas mileage as well as reduction of spark knock. And without a properly working EGR system, your vehicle will likely be unable to pass an emissions test.
What does an EGR temperature sensor look like?
The EGR temperature sensor looks similar to any other temperature sensor on the vehicle. It is a small probe that is inserted into the exhaust manifold. This particular sensor must have a stainless steel body and threads to withstand the heat and corrosive condensate present in the EGR system. The EGR temperature sensor will also likely have two wires leading from the wiring harness.
Can a faulty EGR valve cause overheating?
A faulty EGR stuck in the open position may cause the engine to idle poorly, shake, and fail emissions testing. A faulty EGR valve stuck in the closed position will cause cylinder temperatures to rise, spark knock to occur, and also fail emissions testing. The additional heat generated, however, is not enough to cause engine overheating. The “overheating” related to a faulty EGR valve takes place inside the combustion chambers, certainly affecting engine operation, but not causing the engine to overheat.
