What is an engine torque strut mount and how does it work?

In order to safely secure your engine inside its engine compartment, vehicle manufacturers install several engine mounts that connect the engine to the vehicle’s frame or body. These mounts are constructed of metal - usually steel or aluminum - and rubber. In this way, your engine not only holds fast, but the mounts also prevent excessive vibration when the engine is running.

One of these engine mounts is called a torque strut mount, or “torque mount”. Its particular job is to not only hold the engine (and transmission) and to dampen vibrations, but to also mitigate the effects of engine torque on the vehicle body.

When you shift into gear, your engine has a tendency to surge, to rise up in the engine compartment. It wants to rotate or jump. The engine torque strut mount combats this tendency so that the rest of the vehicle does not feel the sensation, and so that the engine does not cause damage from excessive movement.

How do I know if my vehicle needs the torque strut mount replaced?

Over time, the rubber materials in an engine mount can weaken or crack. When this happens, an engine mount can fail. Signs that the torque strut mount has failed include the following:

Excessive vibration while driving that can be felt in the floorboards or the steering wheel

A clunking sound or feeling upon acceleration

Your engine surges upward or downward in the engine compartment

You hear (or feel) a clunking sound coming from the engine compartment when pressing the accelerator pedal with the brakes engaged (due to the engine striking the inside of the hood or other component)

How is a an Engine Torque Strut Mount Replacement done?

Engine torque strut mount replacement is usually a simpler repair than that of other engine or transmission mounts. Most of the other mounts are located underneath the engine. This one is placed at or near the top and connects the engine to an upper part of the body structure.

In order to replace the torque strut mount, a technician might need to remove the upper engine cover or other accessories for access. An engine brace or lift might be needed to support the weight of the engine for proper alignment of the new component.

From there, the bolts securing the mount in place are removed, the mount is dislodged, and the new mount is inserted into its place. The bolts are installed and torqued to manufacturer’s specifications. Once the mount is in place, the engine brace or lift is removed and any covers or other components that were removed for access are reinstalled.

Yes. A torque strut mount is one of several engine mounts that hold the engine and transmission fast in a vehicle. Like other engine mounts, the torque strut mount is made of metal and rubber, so that it can both hold the engine in place and dampen engine vibrations. What does a worn engine mount sound like?
The telltale sign of a bad engine mount, especially the torque strut, is a clunking sound coming from the engine compartment as your engine jumps up and down as a result of its own torque. One way to tell if an engine mount is bad is to hold down the brake pedal and shift the transmission into gear. Next, press on the accelerator pedal. If the engine leaps up or travels unusually far, a mount could be broken. That excessive travel is often responsible for the engine coming into contact with surfaces it should not.
Can motor mounts cause jerking?
Bad motor mounts can cause the engine to jump around in the engine compartment. That excessive movement can cause a jerking motion that can be felt in the rest of the vehicle. You might also notice a vibration in the floorboards or the steering wheel when an engine mount goes bad.
