HOW IT WORKS

What is an exhaust pipe gasket and how does it work?

An exhaust pipe gasket, sometimes referred to as a “donut” because of its shape, is a seal between components of the exhaust system that runs from front to back along the underside of your vehicle.

An internal combustion engine, like the one in most automobiles, relies on the rapidly expanding gasses produced by burning fuel to propel the pistons inside and produce power. Just as a fire in the fireplace gives off heat and smoke, the combustion process in your engine emits gasses that are extremely hot and hazardous to both humans and the environment. Not only that, but an engine is loud when it is running.

Therefore, an exhaust system is in place to collect those gasses as they leave your engine, remove many of the hazardous compounds, keep the engine quiet, and route the remaining fumes to the rear of your vehicle.

Attached to the cylinder head on an engine is the exhaust manifold that collects the exhaust gasses and passes them off to the catalytic converter. From there, the exhaust passes through a pipe ultimately to the muffler and out the tailpipe. These components are frequently bolted together through mating flanges sealed with an exhaust gasket. The gasket can be made from a fibrous material or from a combination of metal and graphite, and it can be flat or donut-shaped depending on the type of exhaust flange it seals.

HOW IS THIS SERVICE PERFORMED?

How is a an Exhaust Pipe Gasket Replacement done?

To replace a bad exhaust pipe gasket, a technician must first lift and support your vehicle in the air to access the exhaust system before taking the following general steps:

  • Remove exhaust shields as necessary
  • Clean and lubricate the hardware that joins the exhaust pipe flanges
  • Dislodge exhaust hangers from vehicle body or frame to allow clearance
  • Remove the fasteners and separate the joint between exhaust components (i.e catalytic converter and downpipe, or exhaust pipe and muffler)
  • Extract the old gasket
  • Clean the mating flange
  • Insert the new gasket
  • Align the exhaust components and install new hardware
  • Reattach exhaust hangers and reinstall shields
  • Lower vehicle and start engine to verify that the leak has been sealed It is important to note that, given its proximity to the ground, it is common for exhaust components to suffer a significant amount of corrosion. That makes removal of mounting hardware difficult in many cases. It is not uncommon for a technician to have to separate these components with a torch or cutting tool. In more severe cases, new flanges might need to be welded in place before a fresh gasket can be installed.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs a new exhaust pipe gasket?

The signs of a bad exhaust pipe gasket are simple and can be fairly obvious. When one or more of the gaskets in your exhaust system fails, hot exhaust gasses will escape as a result. You might notice a burning odor or the smell of exhaust somewhere other than the rear of your vehicle when the engine is running. You will likely hear excessive noise as well. The greater the leak, the louder the sound of your engine.

Other questions customers ask

Are exhaust pipe gaskets necessary?
Yes. An exhaust system consists of several components that are either clamped, welded, or bolted together in a configuration that snakes its way along the vehicle underbody from the engine to the rear of the vehicle. Any components that are bolted together will feature a pair of flanges that mate together, connected essentially by nuts and bolts. A gasket is sandwiched between the flanges to keep the joint air tight. Without that gasket, the exhaust system would leak harmful fumes and produce excessive noise.
Is it okay to drive with an exhaust leak?
It is important to correct an exhaust leak as soon as possible. While it is technically possible to drive a vehicle with an exhaust leak, it can pose a serious hazard. The fumes that emanate from the exhaust system are harmful, especially if they enter the passenger compartment. And the excessive noise produced by a leaking exhaust system is unlawful in most municipalities.
How do you seal an exhaust leak without welding?
While there are a number of home remedies purported to seal an exhaust leak in a vehicle, the only sound solution is to replace the components that are causing the leak. That includes a new exhaust pipe gasket when components are bolted together with flanges. If the flanges are bad, or if a section of exhaust pipe is rusted through, those components should be cut off and replaced with new parts, typically welded in place. In some cases, the pipes can be sleeved and clamped instead of welded.
