THE IMPORTANCE OF A Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement

What is a fuel pressure regulator and how does it work?

A fuel pressure regulator controls the pressure of the fuel entering the fuel injectors. Your engine needs a steady flow of fuel from the fuel tank at just the right pressure for peak performance. On older vehicles with what is known as a “continuous return” fuel system, the fuel pump extracts more fuel than is needed from the tank. In this system, the fuel pressure regulator returns excess fuel to the tank, thereby relieving the amount of fuel pressure. With this arrangement, the fuel pressure regulator is typically mounted on the fuel rail stop the engine. Newer vehicles have a “returnless” fuel system, in which the fuel pressure regulator, mounted directly on the fuel pump and controlled by the vehicle’s computer, draws the precise amount of fuel needed. No excess fuel needs to be returned to the tank.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs a new fuel pressure regulator?

The fuel pressure regulator controls the amount of fuel sent to the fuel injectors. If this process is not working properly, a number of problems can occur. While symptoms can differ depending on whether a continuous return or returnless system is used, you might notice one or more of the following if your fuel pressure regulator fails:

Rough idle or engine misfire

Decreased fuel economy

Failed emissions test

Black smoke coming from the exhaust

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform A Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement ?

The procedure to replace a fuel pressure regulator depends on the type of fuel delivery system that is present on your vehicle and where the regulator is located. Some are mounted on the engine, and some on the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank. Steps to replace a fuel pressure regulator may include the following:

  • Depressurize the fuel system
  • Remove engine shields and other components to access the regulator, or…
  • Lift and support the vehicle to remove the fuel tank and pull out the fuel pump assembly
  • Disconnect any hoses, wires, and vacuum lines that are attached to the pressure regulator
  • Remove the fuel pressure regulator
  • Install and connect the new regulator
  • Reinstall the fuel pump assembly and tank or replace the engine shields and other components
  • Bleed the air from the fuel system (on some models)

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

What happens when your fuel pressure regulator goes out?
When a fuel pressure regulator fails, the fuel will reach the fuel injectors with either too much or too little pressure. That causes a rich fuel mixture or a lean one. Both are problems for your engine that the computer will likely detect and try to compensate for by altering the time that the injectors open. Sometimes the pressure is off by quite a bit when the fuel pressure regulator goes bad. Too much for the injectors to compensate. In that case, your engine will run poorly or not at all.
Can you clean a fuel pressure regulator?
Although there are methods that claim to clean a fuel pressure regulator, they are often unnecessary and unable to address the root cause of a malfunctioning regulator. The fuel that enters the fuel pressure regulator has passed through the main fuel filter, or at least the filter screen in the fuel tank. A clogged fuel pressure regulator - one that might need to be cleaned - is extremely rare.
Where is a fuel pressure regulator located?
Where the fuel pressure regulator can be found on a vehicle depends on the type of fuel delivery system used on that vehicle. If your engine relies on what is known as a “continuous return” style system, the likely location for the fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel rail that feeds the injectors on the engine. If, on the other hand, the regulator is part of a “returnless” system used on newer vehicles, it is probably part of the fuel pump assembly unit mounted inside the fuel tank.
