THE IMPORTANCE OF A Fuel Pressure Test

What is a fuel pressure test?

A fuel pressure test is a procedure used to verify that the gasoline being supplied from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors in each cylinder are receiving the proper amount of pressure to work as they should. Too much or too little fuel pressure to the engine can result in problems with the combustion process. The results of the test can indicate a malfunction somewhere in the system, often with the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs a fuel pressure test?

If your fuel system is creating too much or too little fuel pressure, there is usually a problem with a component of the system. You might notice one or more of several signs of improper fuel pressure, including:

Drop in fuel efficiency

Failed emissions test

Black smoke coming from the tailpipe

Rough idling or misfiring engine

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform A Fuel Pressure Test ?

A fuel pressure test is performed across multiple engine conditions - off, idling, and under a load. To perform a fuel pressure test, a technician will typically do the following:

  • Remove any covers or guards necessary for access to the fuel rail on top of the engine
  • Locate the fuel pressure test port on the fuel rail
  • Connect a fuel pressure gauge or tester to the port
  • Activate the fuel pump without starting the engine and noting the pressure produced
  • Shut off the fuel pump and observe the tester reading for several minutes to determine whether the is any leak down of pressure from the system
  • Start the engine and recheck the pressure with the engine running
  • Observe the pressure reading again with the engine under a load (throttle engaged or “snapped”)
  • Drain or bleed fuel system pressure and disconnect the gauge
  • Reinstall any parts that were removed for access
  • If a problem with the pressure is detected, the technician will then need to perform additional testing to locate the cause of the problem.

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

Can a weak battery cause low fuel pressure?
There are several causes of low fuel pressure. One lesser-known cause is a weak battery. That is because the fuel pump (and some fuel pressure regulators) is powered by electricity. When your battery is weak and the electrical system voltage drops too low, the fuel pump can slow down and pressure can drop. In addition, the fuel pressure regulator may not correctly control pressure if it is getting improper voltage.
What are the symptoms of low fuel pressure?
Low fuel pressure results in too little fuel being available for proper combustion in your engine’s cylinders. When your vehicle is low on fuel pressure, it might shake, sputter, or blow black smoke. It can also run poorly, have a hard time accelerating, stall out, or even refuse to start. If your engine is running “lean” with too little fuel (leading to an improper air-to-fuel ratio), significant damage can occur.
What causes a lack of fuel pressure?
A number of causes can lead to low fuel pressure to your engine. Anything from a bad fuel pump, failing fuel pressure regulator, or a clogged fuel filter can prevent the flow of fuel and cause a drop in fuel pressure in the system. Even a kinked or pinched fuel line can cause the problem.
