THE IMPORTANCE OF Heater Control Valve Replacement

What is a heater control valve and how does it work?

A heater control valve (sometimes referred to as a hot water valve) is a component of both the heating and air conditioning (HVAC) system and the engine cooling system. The device diverts some of the hot coolant (antifreeze) from your engine, through a heater hose, and to the heater core inside the passenger compartment. The heater core absorbs heat from the engine coolant and a fan blowing through the heater core pushes warm air through the cabin vents.

The heater control valve moderates the amount of heat blowing into the cabin in response to your selections on the climate controls. When you choose the heat function, the valve opens to allow coolant into the heater core and you get warm air. When you turn off the heat, or turn on the AC, the valve remains closed.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs the heater control valve replaced?

There are a number of signs that the heater control valve on your vehicle is not working as it should, including:

Little or no heat comes from the vents when you select the heat settings

The AC doesn't blow cold air or blows warm air instead

Warm air comes out of the vents no matter what setting you select

The temperature fluctuates intermittently

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform Heater Control Valve Replacement ?

Starting with a cool engine, a technician will follow these general steps to replace a heater control valve on your vehicle:

  • Block the flow of coolant to the heater control valve or drain the coolant from the system
  • Unclamp the heater hoses from the valve and dislodge the hoses
  • Disconnect the wire harness plug from the valve assembly
  • Unfasten the heater control valve and remove it from the vehicle
  • Install the new valve and reconnect the hoses
  • Reattach the wiring
  • Top off or replace the engine coolant
  • Bleed the cooling system of air (this usually requires special equipment, procedure, or both)

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

Where is the heater control valve located?
The heater control valve on most vehicles is located in the engine compartment near the firewall (the body panel beneath the windshield and between the engine and occupants). The valve is inserted in line with the heater hose leading from the engine to the heater core input tube that protrudes through the firewall.
What would happen if the heater control valve was stuck closed?
If your heater control valve sticks in the fully closed position, it will not allow hot engine coolant (antifreeze) to flow from the engine block to the heater core. No hot coolant to the heater core means no heat from the vents. No matter what setting you choose on the climate controls, only cool air will come from the vents.
Will a bad heater control valve cause overheating?
A bad heater control valve could cause engine overheating. If the valve sticks open, only warm air will come from the cabin vents. If the valve sticks closed, only cool air will blow. But if the heater control valve is leaking, the loss of coolant can cause overheating. Any coolant loss can become serious if not addressed, since overheating can lead to catastrophic engine damage and costly repairs.
