An extension housing seal is an oil seal located at the back end of the transmission on a rear-wheel or four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The rearmost part of a transmission, the place where the output shaft (and often the vehicle speed sensor) is located, is called the extension housing. The driveshaft connects to this part of the transmission by way of the slip yoke.
The extension housing seal, sometimes called a transmission output shaft seal, is pressed into the housing, and the driveshaft slip yoke is inserted through the seal. The seal stops transmission fluid from leaking out and prevents dust or moisture from getting inside.

How do I know if my vehicle needs an extension housing seal replacement?

Because the job of the extension housing seal is to keep fluid from leaking from around the transmission output shaft and driveshaft slip yoke, the main sign that the seal has gone bad is a fluid leak at the back of the transmission. Visible cracks in the seal are also an indication that it needs to be replaced.

How does a technician perform Extension Housing Seal Replacement ?

To replace the extension housing seal on a transmission, a technician will first need to lift and support your vehicle off of the ground for access. With the vehicle in place and any shields or guards removed, the following general steps are common:

Disconnect and remove the driveshaft and slip yoke connected to the transmission
Remove the extension housing seal, taking care to avoid damage to the extension housing bushing
Press the new seal into place
Reinsert the slip yoke and reattach the driveshaft
Torque all fasteners
Reinstall any shields and guards that were removed It should be noted that, in some cases, the seal fails because the extension housing bushing has gone bad and will no longer hold the slip yoke properly. When this occurs, the technician might also need to replace the bushing along with the seal to prevent future leaks.

What is a tail shaft seal?
“Tail shaft seal” is another name for the extension housing seal on a transmission. Actually, the component is referred to by several other names as well, including output shaft seal, rear transmission seal, and driveshaft seal. No matter what name it is given, this part is in place to keep fluid from escaping out of the back of the transmission where it connects to the driveshaft.
Can I drive with a leaking extension housing seal?
Driving with a leaking extension housing seal is not inherently dangerous, however keep in mind that every drop of fluid lost through the seal means less lubrication for the rest of the transmission. Eventually the leak will worsen and the transmission will empty itself of fluid and be ruined.
Where is the rear main seal?
The rear main seal is an oil seal installed at the back of an engine. It prevents engine oil from leaking out around the crankshaft where it connects to the transmission. Although it performs a similar function, the rear main seal is not the same as the transmission extension housing seal.
