What is a strut mount and how does it work?
An upper strut mount is a component of a MacPherson strut assembly used in vehicles with independent suspension systems. The strut assembly consists of a strut body, coil spring, and strut cartridge (shock absorber) all held together under tension as a single unit by a metal plate at the top called the upper strut mount. The strut mount does more than hold the strut together, though. It also fastens the strut to the vehicle body. On front struts, the strut mount (sometimes referred to as a bearing plate) includes a set of ball bearings so that the strut can easily rotate with the steering wheel.
How do I know if a strut mount needs to be replaced?
The struts on your vehicle are integral to both the steering and suspension systems. They are designed to absorb bumps, compensate for weight shifts when turning, and keep your tires in constant contact with the road. The front struts also serve as the pivot point for the steering system. Telltale signs that a strut mount needs to be replaced include:
Knocking or thumping sounds when going over bumps or turning
A creaking sound when turning the steering wheel
Uneven tire tread wear

How does a technician perform A Strut Mount Replacement ?
Most strut assemblies are serviceable, allowing for the upper strut mount to be replaced. The procedure is more time consuming than simply replacing the entire assembly. It is also more hazardous and requires special tools and experience to prevent serious injury. To replace a strut mount, a mechanic will first need to safely lift and support your vehicle off of the ground and remove the wheels and tires. From there, the following general steps are necessary:
Remove the brake hose from its mount on the strut assembly
Detach the stabilizer bar link (in some cases) from the strut
Remove the bolts that fasten the strut to the steering knuckle
Separate the top of the knuckle from the upper control arm ball joint (on some vehicles)
Remove the upper strut mount at the top of the shock tower
Free the strut assembly from the vehicle
Using a special tool or machine, compress the coil spring to relieve tension on the strut cartridge
Remove the upper retaining nut to release the strut body from the spring
Decompress the spring to free up the mount (on some models)
Remove the old strut mount and insert the new one
Recompress the spring (if necessary)
Install the retaining nut on the top of the strut cartridge
Release the spring compressor, taking care to ensure that the spring, strut body, and upper mount are in alignment
Reinstall the strut assembly in the strut tower
Reattach the knuckle, upper control arm ball joint (when necessary), sway bar link, and brake line
Reinstall the wheel and tire and lower the vehicle
In many cases, a wheel alignment will also be necessary
Note - Extreme caution must be taken when disassembling a strut assembly to prevent the coil spring from dislodging while under tension. Serious injury or death can occur otherwise.

Can I replace only the strut mount?
Yes. On most strut assemblies, the upper mount can be replaced on its own. Some models include the bearing plate with the mount as a separate unit whereas others separate the two. The procedure is the same either way. It should be noted that it is often more economical (and safer) to replace the entire strut assembly than to overhaul an old one.
What happens when strut mounts fail?
Strut assemblies are important components of both the steering and suspension systems on your vehicle. Strut mounts are susceptible to corrosion, collision damage, and wear and tear. Rough driving conditions can shorten their lifespan. If a strut mount fails, the steering and suspension will be affected. Do strut mounts affect wheel alignment?
