THE IMPORTANCE OF Tire Rotation
What is tire rotation?
Tire rotation is the process of changing the position of the tires on your vehicle. Tires are “rotated” or repositioned front to back and side to side in a specific pattern determined by the vehicle manufacturer. Some rotation patterns, for example, designate that the rear tires move directly to the front, while the front tires crisscross to the back. Other rotation patterns might include the full-size spare tire in the sequence. The reason for routine tire rotation is that tires tend to wear out faster if they remain in one position. Therefore, it is recommended by both vehicle and tire makers that your tires be rotated regularly. This allows them to wear evenly over a longer period of time. Some tire warranties require that tire rotations be performed on a routine basis.
How do I know if my tires need to be rotated?
Premature tread wear on either the front or rear tires is a sign that your tires need to be rotated. Or rather, that they should have been rotated and were not. When tires are not repositioned every so often, they tend to wear out faster. Premature wear is usually found on the front tires of a front-wheel-drive vehicle, and on the back tires of a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. That is not to be confused with uneven tire wear resultant from a bad wheel alignment.

How does a technician perform Tire Rotation ?
Tire rotation is simple. At the same time, it requires that your entire vehicle be safely suspended off of the ground so that all of the wheels and tires can be removed at once. Most vehicle manufacturers designate a rotation pattern that requires repositioning both front to back and side to side. A typical tire rotation will consist of the following steps:
Raise and support your vehicle on a lift
Remove all four wheels and tires (and the spare tire on some vehicles)
Following the recommended rotation pattern, reposition the wheels and tires to their new locations (i.e. rear wheels forward, front wheels criss crossed to the back)
Install the wheels in their new positions
Lower the vehicle and torque the lugs to factory specifications
OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK
Is tire rotation really necessary?
Yes. If you want your tires to last as long as possible, it is necessary - and recommended by both vehicle and tire manufacturers - to have them rotated regularly, every six months or so. A good rule of thumb is to rotate your tires with each oil change. Each tire receives a different degree of stress depending on where it is located on your vehicle. When you have your tires rotated, and they take a turn at every position, you allow them to wear evenly. They all then tend to wear at the same rate and over a longer period of time.
What is the correct tire rotation?
There is no single tire rotation pattern for all vehicles. Traditionally, it was common to simply move the rear wheels forward and the front wheels back. Today, vehicle manufacturers have discovered the pattern that is most likely to achieve the desired results. And they make a recommendation that a specific pattern be followed. For instance, on some front-wheel-drive vehicles, the tires are rotated in a cross pattern, where the front tires cross to the rear, and the rear tires cross to the front. On others, the rear tires move straight forward and the front tires cross to the back. Some trucks and SUVs with full-size spare tires include the spare in the sequence as well.
What happens if I never rotate my tires?
If you ignore the recommendation for rotating your tires and leave them in one position, your tires will wear unevenly and at different rates. The service life of your tires will be reduced, and your vehicle could suffer a loss of traction, handling, and steering ability. If you do not rotate your tires, you might also void your tire warranty.
