THE IMPORTANCE OF A Turbocharger Replacement

What is a turbocharger and how does it work?

A turbocharger is a type of air pump or compressor that helps to increase the horsepower of an engine. Sometimes referred to simply as a “turbo”, the device draws in air from the atmosphere, compresses it, and forces it into the engine. The fuel management system then matches the extra air input with additional fuel. This process yields higher peak horsepower than an engine can otherwise produce without a turbocharger. It is similar to a supercharger, but, where a supercharger runs on a belt connected to the engine’s crankshaft, a turbocharger has an internal turbine wheel that is powered by exhaust gases exiting the engine.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if a turbocharger needs to be replaced?

If your engine is equipped with a turbocharger, you might notice the following signs that is failing:

You sense a loss of engine horsepower and/or fuel efficiency

You hear a loud and harsh whining or siren sound coming from the engine when it is under a high load

You see excessive blue or black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe

Upon inspection, the spark plugs are fouled with oil

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform A Turbocharger Replacement ?

Some of the problems with a turbocharger are relatively simple repairs, such as a loose hose or electrical connection. A technician will check for those first. If the component needs to be replaced, the technician will need to do the following:

  • Disconnect the exhaust system and lowering it out of the way to access the turbocharger
  • Remove oil lines, coolant lines, electrical connectors, sensors, and air hoses
  • Detach and remove the the turbocharger and install the new component
  • Note - While installation is typically the reverse of removal, a special oil priming procedure may be necessary. A scan-tool may also be required to perform a “relearn'' procedure so that the new turbocharger can sync with the vehicle’s ECU (Engine Control Unit) properly.

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

Can I drive a car if the turbo is out?
Yes. A vehicle can typically be driven if the turbocharger fails. However, you may notice a drop in fuel economy and a loss of engine power. Your vehicle might also fail an emission test. If the turbocharger is leaking oil or coolant inside, it can also cause serious and significant engine damage.
How much horsepower does a turbocharger add to an engine?
The amount of additional power an engine receives from a turbocharger depends greatly on the vehicle make and model. In general, you can expect gains of 10-25% above the normal output of your engine.
What causes a turbocharger to fail?
Turbochargers can fail because of a number of reasons related to poor vehicle maintenance. For instance, using the wrong grade or viscosity of oil, driving with contaminated oil because you have not kept up with routine oil changes, or your engine falling low on oil or coolant can all lead to a bad turbocharger. There are times when the component fails because of a defective part.
