When you drive, dust and debris gets kicked up into the air from the road which can be harmful to the engine of your vehicle. If these particles get into the engine and the oil of your car, they can cause extensive damage. Car filters are responsible for keeping everything clean in order to prevent damage.
The four main filters protecting your vehicles are:
- Engine air filter
- Cabin air filter
- Oil filter
- Fuel filter
Engine Air Filter
The main task of the engine air filter is to filter impurities from the air that are being directed into the engine. If you’re driving in a heavily polluted or dusty area, you may need to change your engine air filter more frequently.
This filter plays a vital role in proper combustion and optimal fuel efficiency. If proper combustion doesn’t take place, you’ll end up losing fuel mileage because the engine has to work even harder to do its job. It’s important to change the engine air filter everyone 15,000 – 30,000 miles or at every other oil change interval.
Cabin Air Filter
The main task of the cabin air filter is to prevent pollen and dust particles in the air from getting into your vehicle. This filter affects the health of both the driver and their passengers, so make sure to routinely switch it out, about every 12,000 – 15,000 miles or once a year.
The oil filter is designed to improve the performance of the engine by getting rid of any particles that get into the oil of the engine Since there are a lot of moving parts in the engine, over time there can be a buildup of impurities in the the fluid. These impurities (sludge, metallic particles, dirt) can damage the engine which is why an oil filter is needed. This filter removes these impurities and ensures only clean oil is distributed in the engine. These need to be replaced with every oil change.
The fuel filter removes any potentially damaging particles in your fuel. The impurities that come with petroleum aren’t harmful to the engine, however, it’s best for the long-term health of the car if they are eliminated by the fuel filter. They should be changed about every 20,000 – 40,000 miles or once every other year depending upon driving conditions.
