HOW IT WORKS

What is a TPMS valve service kit?

Starting with the 2008 model year, and thanks to the TREAD Act passed by Congress in 2000, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, TPMS for short, has been standard on vehicles sold in the US. TPMS uses sensors inside the wheel to continuously monitor pressure in your tires and send you a warning on the dashboard display when tire pressure falls below a designated threshold.

The sensors are mounted on the inside end of the valve stems where the air goes into your tires. Over time, these special valve stems can get damaged or become brittle with age. A TPMS valve service kit comes with the components needed to replace the factory stem, valve, and seals. Some kits also include the TPMS sensor.

HOW IS THIS SERVICE PERFORMED?

How is a a TPMS Valve Service Kit Installation done?

To install a TPMS valve service kit, a technician will need to raise and support your vehicle off of the ground and remove each tire needing service before performing the following steps:

  • Remove the valve from the valve stem to release air from the tire
  • Use a pneumatic tire machine to break the seal (the bead) of the tire from the wheel
  • Place the tire onto the tire machine and secure it in place
  • Use the machine to dislodge or demount the tire from the wheel
  • Unscrew the TPMS sensor from the back of the valve stem
  • Pull the valve stem from the wheel
  • Install the new valve stem kit in the wheel and attach the sensor
  • Remount the tire, seat the bead against the wheel, and add air to seal the bead
  • Install the valve core and inflate to the proper tire pressure
  • Most repair shops pair tire installation with tire balancing. When mounting and balancing, the technician will use a tire balancing machine to offset weight imbalances that naturally occur in the tire and wheel.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if a tire needs a TPMS valve service kit?

The TPMS sensors in your tires communicate wirelessly with a computer in your vehicle to let you know if one or more of your tires are low on air. If the sensor goes bad, the computer will no longer be able to receive a signal and it will alert you to that fact. If, on the other hand, a valve stem fails, either because it was damaged or because it developed a leak due to age and deterioration, your tire will lose air.

If the sensor is working properly, you will see a dashboard icon light up (or see a digital readout on some models) telling you that your tire is low on air. Some loss of air in your tires over time is normal. But if a tire loses air frequently, there is either a hole in the tire, a bad seal around the bead of the tire, or a bad valve stem. A TPMS valve service kit is designed to replace a faulty TPMS valve stem.

Other questions customers ask

Can you replace just the valve stem on a wheel with TPMS?
On some vehicles, the TPMS sensor mounted inside the wheel comes with the valve stem permanently attached. In those cases, the entire assembly must be replaced if any part of it goes bad. On other vehicles, the sensor detaches from the end of the valve stem, allowing for the stem to be replaced with a TPMS valve service kit. In either case, the tire must be separated from the wheel for access to the sensor.
Can you replace the TPMS yourself?
Some TPMS sensors include a rubber valve stem that snaps into the wheel just like any other valve stem. The process is not very different that it might be with an ordinary wheel and valve stem. Other TPMS valve stems are installed with hex fasteners and require accurate torque upon installation. This process is slightly more complex. However, in all cases, in order to replace a valve stem and/or TPMS sensor, the tire must be separated from the wheel. Breaking the seal between the bead of the tire and the rim is best done with a special pneumatic tire machine to avoid damage to both the tire and wheel.
What happens if you don't replace the TPMS sensors?
Your TPMS sensors need to be replaced any time their batteries go dead. They should be recalibrated every time you have a new set of tires installed on your vehicle. If you do not have the sensors replaced or recalibrated, your vehicle’s TPMS will not function as it should. In most cases, the warning light will remain on until the problem is corrected. In all cases, you will have no way of detecting that your tires are low on air while driving, a condition that can lead to poor vehicle handling and unsafe driving conditions, not to mention premature tire wear.
