THE IMPORTANCE OF An EVAP Canister Vent Valve Replacement

What is an EVAP canister vent valve and how does it work?

The EVAP canister vent valve is part of an emission control system that traps vapors coming from the fuel tank and allows them to be burned inside the engine rather than be released into the environment.

Gasoline that is allowed to evaporate into the atmosphere is not only wasted but adds emissions that can be bad for the environment and harmful to humans. The EVAP system allows the fuel tank to be vented so that pressure does not build up inside, while at the same time preventing the gasoline vapors from escaping.

The purpose of the vent valve in this system is to close when the engine control module (ECM) performs leak testing on the EVAP system, thereby creating an airtight apparatus. When this happens, the ECM monitors the rate of drop in the pressure of the system, which determines if a leak is present and the severity of the leak. Without the canister vent valve, this test would not be possible.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs an EVAP canister vent valve replacement?

Your vehicle might need the EVAP canister vent valve replaced if any of the following signs are occurring:

You (or a technician) observe that the vent valve is cracked, broken, or otherwise damaged

The EVAP canister is damaged and needs to be replaced (on certain models, the EVAP canister vent valve is part of the EVAP canister and cannot be replaced separately)

A check engine light is illuminated along with codes displayed relating to EVAP system leaks or incorrect flow. Examples include: P0440, P0441, P0442, P0446, P0455 or P0456

Difficulty pumping gas into your vehicle's tank without the pump ""clicking off"" multiple times before the tank is full, and/or not being able to fill the tank

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform An EVAP Canister Vent Valve Replacement ?

To replace the EVAP canister vent valve, a technician will likely take the following general steps:

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to cut power to the vehicle
  • Remove any shields, guards, covers, ducts, and (possibly) the fuel tank or spare tire to gain access to the EVAP canister vent valve
  • Disconnect and remove the wiring from the EVAP canister vent valve

  • Remove any screws or fasteners holding the EVAP canister vent valve in place
  • Dislodge the old unit and insert the new EVAP canister vent valve
  • Reconnect the hoses and wiring

Other Questions Customers Ask

What happens if you don't replace your EVAP canister?
If your EVAP canister is bad and you do not replace it, your vehicle will likely be unable to pass an emissions test. You might also smell the fumes of fuel when the vehicle is shut off and have a hard time filling the fuel tank.
Is the EVAP canister vent valve the same as the EVAP purge valve?
Although they bear similar names, the EVAP canister vent valve is not the same component as the EVAP purge valve (or solenoid). The vent valve allows the fuel vapors to vent through the charcoal canister when open, and the purge valve controls when engine vacuum is applied to the EVAP system to clear out the EVAP canister of fumes.
Where is the EVAP canister vent valve located?
The EVAP canister vent valve is often located on or near the EVAP charcoal canister, which is normally mounted near the fuel tank.
