THE IMPORTANCE OF An EGR Tube Replacement

What is an EGR tube and how does it work?

An EGR tube is a metal tube made of stainless steel, carbon steel, or cast iron that allows recycled exhaust gases to flow through it while on their way to the EGR cooler or EGR valve.

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system is an emissions control system that takes some of the exhaust gases from your engine’s exhaust manifold and recirculates them back into the engine through the intake manifold. The exhaust gases are then pulled into the engine and combined with the fresh air and fuel entering the cylinders.

Recirculation of the exhaust gases in your engine helps to reduce combustion temperatures and improve fuel economy. The lower temperatures reduce the amount of Nitrogen oxides (NOx, a greenhouse gas regulated by the EPA)) produced by the engine. Automakers are required by federal law to limit the amount of NOx produced by their vehicles.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs the EGR tube replaced?

The job of an EGR tube is to carry a precise amount of extremely hot exhaust gases from one part of your engine to another. These exhaust gases can rise to more than two thousand degrees Fahrenheit. They also carry harsh chemicals that can form a corrosive condensate when combined inside the engine. Because of this, EGR tubes are prone to corrosion, cracking, and blockage due to condensate & carbon buildup. If any of these conditions occur, you may notice any one or more of the following:

Check engine light illuminated

Vehicle shaking or running rough, especially when at partial throttle or idle

Vehicle spark knocking

Rough idle

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform An EGR Tube Replacement ?

The EGR tube is usually located at or near the top of your engine, running between the exhaust and intake manifolds. To replace the EGR tube, a technician will likely take the following general steps:

  • Remove any shields, guards, covers, or ducts to gain access to the EGR tube
  • Disconnect any sensors attached to the EGR tube
  • Remove any mounting screws or hardware retaining the tube to both the intake and exhaust manifolds
  • Remove the old EGR tube and insert the new one
  • Re-attach the mounting screws
  • Connect the electrical plugs to any sensors on the EGR tube
  • Re install any shields, guards, covers, or ducts that were removed
  • Run an EGR Function test with a scan-tool to verify the system is working correctly
  • In some cases, coolant lines may need to be disconnected as well, and the coolant will need to be topped off (and possibly bled of air).

Other Questions Customers Ask

Can a car run without EGR?
In theory a car can run without EGR; however, operating your vehicle without a functioning EGR system is not recommended for several reasons. Running a car without EGR can cause it to fail an emissions test. It will also raise temperatures inside the combustion chambers and can increase spark knock. A bad EGR system can even lead to severe and irreparable engine damage.
Does an EGR pipe leak cause issues?
Yes, an EGR pipe leak means that your EGR system is no longer functioning properly. That means harmful NOx gases can be released into the air. A bad EGR system can also lead to, at worst case, severe engine damage, and at the least, a failed emissions test.
Can you clean an EGR tube?
A technician might have the option of cleaning the EGR tube on your engine rather than replacing it. Carbon deposits are common with an EGR tube; therefore, those deposits can be scraped and brushed out of the tube along with a special cleaner. Whether or not it is a good idea for your engine depends on how much damage has been done to the component and the cost of a new one.
