THE IMPORTANCE OF A Fuel Evaporative Canister Replacement

What is a fuel evaporative canister and how does it work?

The fuel evaporative (EVAP) canister is an emission control device that traps vapors coming from the fuel tank and sends them back to the tank to be used later. Gasoline that is allowed to evaporate into the atmosphere is not only wasted, but adds emissions that are bad for the environment and harmful to humans. The EVAP canister allows the fuel tank to be vented so that pressure does not build up inside, while at the same time preventing the gasoline vapors from escaping. Known also through the years as a “vapor canister” or “charcoal canister”, this filter is connected to the fuel tank with a tube. As the gasoline evaporates inside of the tank, the vapors are collected in the tube and sent to the canister where they are absorbed by activated carbon, or charcoal. The fuel is stored there until it is drawn back out by the engine through a series of valves.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if a fuel evaporative canister needs to be replaced?

There are a number of signs of a failing fuel evaporative canister. Most of the time, a bad EVAP canister will trigger a Check Engine Light to come on, indicating a problem with pressure in the system. Other signs might include:

The smell of gasoline when your vehicle has been sitting, especially on warm days

Difficulty pumping gas into the tank without the pump clicking off before the tank is filled

Excessive pressure released from the tank when you remove the gas cap

Difficulty starting your engine

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform A Fuel Evaporative Canister Replacement ?

The fuel evaporative canister is usually located underneath a vehicle, somewhere near the fuel tank. To replace the canister, a mechanic will likely need to safely lift and support your vehicle off of the ground for access. From there, the process is similar on most vehicle makes and models and includes the following:

  • Remove any shields, guards, skid plates, or other components covering the EVAP canister
  • Disconnect the vent hoses and harness wires that lead to the canister
  • Unbolt the fasteners that mount the canister to the vehicle body or frame
  • Dislodge the bad canister from its mounting location and fasten a new one in its place
  • Connect the hoses and harness
  • Reinstall the components removed for access
  • Clear the diagnostic codes from the vehicle’s computer

Other Questions Customers Ask

What happens if you don't replace your EVAP canister?
If your EVAP canister is leaking and you do not replace it, the likelihood is that your vehicle will fail an emissions test, emit an obnoxious odor of gasoline, lose fuel efficiency, and affect engine performance.
Can you drive with a bad EVAP canister?
Unlike some components that will prevent you from driving at all when they fail, a bad EVAP canister will not stop your vehicle from driving. On the other hand, the smell of gasoline can be harmful to you and your passengers inside your vehicle. Your car might also lose fuel efficiency, and it might not pass an emissions test.
What causes EVAP canister failure?
A fuel evaporative (EVAP) canister can be damaged when a vehicle’s fuel tank is overfilled, allowing gasoline to enter the vent line leading to the canister. The charcoal inside the canister is designed to absorb vapors, not liquid. Over time, liquids entering the canister can degrade it and ruin the activated carbon.
