THE IMPORTANCE OF A Tire Installation

What is tire installation?

Tire installation, also known as tire "mounting", is the process of fitting a tire onto a wheel, sealing the bead around the edges, and filling the tire with air. While the service can certainly be performed with pre-owned tires, it often refers to the installation of new tires. The service typically includes removal of the old tire from the wheel as well. Some repair shops and tire shops package tire installation together with tire balancing and a wheel alignment check. Disposal of your old tires and any repairs needed for a proper wheel alignment usually cost extra.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know when my tires need to be replaced?

Tires wear out over time. They are also subjected to a lot of abuse from potholes and other road hazards. They suffer the effects of the elements, from extreme heat to cold and ice and snow. And tires feel the effects of age. Sometimes you can feel when your tires are not performing as they should. A vibration in the floor, seat, or steering wheel. The sensation that your vehicle is waddling down the road. Skidding or increased stopping distances. Other times, you can see problems with your tires. Since the tires are the only parts of your vehicle that come in contact with the ground, it is essential that they remain in serviceable shape. Therefore, you should visually inspect your tires regularly for signs of damage, wear, or age. Signs that indicate it is time for new tires include:

Vibration while driving

Tires will not hold air consistently

Cracking in the rubber

Cuts, gouges, or missing chunks of rubber

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform A Tire Installation ?

The procedures that a technician will follow to install new tires on your vehicle vary slightly, depending on the type of vehicle and the profile of the tires. A large truck tire requires a slightly different procedure than a low-profile performance tire does. In general, steps to install new tires include:

  • Lift and support the vehicle off of the ground
  • Remove the wheels and tires from the vehicle
  • Remove the valve core to deflate the tire
  • Using the bead breaker of a pneumatic tire machine, break the seal between the tire and the wheel
  • Fix the wheel and tire to the tire machine
  • Use the machine to dislodge or demount the tire from the wheel
  • Lubricate the wheel and the new tire
  • Use the machine to mount the new tire onto the rim
  • Seat the bead against the wheel
  • Install the valve core and inflate to the proper tire pressure
  • Most repair shops pair tire installation with tire balancing. When mounting and balancing, the technician will use a tire balancing machine to offset weight imbalances that naturally occur in the tire and wheel.

Other Questions Customers Ask

Can I buy tires and install them myself?
Tire installation is not an especially complex task, however it is an extremely difficult job without the proper equipment and training. Care must be taken when installing tires to avoid damage to the tires or expensive wheels. Mistakes can not only be costly, they can be dangerous. A qualified technician will use a dedicated (and expensive) tire machine to break the bead of the tire, separate it from the wheel, and install the new tire. Another machine is used to balance the weight of the wheel and tire once installation is complete. This is a necessary step in order to correct imbalances in weight distribution and enable the wheel and tire to work together as a balanced unit.
Is wheel alignment necessary when installing new tires?
A new set of tires on your vehicle does not require that you get a wheel alignment. But if your vehicle is out of alignment, those new tires will not last nearly as long as they should, and they will not perform to their potential. An alignment helps to keep your tires in contact with the road at the specific angles so they track properly. That is why most tire shops recommend an alignment check when you get new tires. An alignment check is essentially the same procedure as a wheel alignment, except that it only measures your vehicle to determine whether it is in alignment. If it is out of specs, an alignment will be recommended.
How do I know if I need an alignment or tire balance?
Signs that your vehicle needs a wheel alignment or that your tires need to be balanced can be similar. In fact, some of the symptoms overlap. For instance, in both cases, you might notice that your vehicle shakes when you are driving down the road. You feel a vibration in the floorboard, seat, or steering wheel. But with a poor alignment, there are a number of other indicators, such as uneven tire wear, your vehicle pulls to one side, or the steering wheel is crooked.
