THE IMPORTANCE OF A Window Regulator Replacement

What is a window regulator and how does it work?

A window regulator is a mechanical assembly that opens and closes a window in a vehicle. The regulator consists of a system of metal arms or cables attached to a gearbox. Whenever someone actuates the gearbox, the window travels up or down. While window regulators of the past often required a passenger to manually turn a crank to operate them, modern regulators are usually fitted with an electric motor. When a driver or passenger presses the window switch, an electrical signal is sent to the window regulator motor, which, in turn, drives the window up or down.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if a window regulator needs to be replaced?

If a window in your vehicle will no longer go up or down, the fault may be with the window regulator. Other signs that a window regulator may need to be replaced include:

Window travels up or down slowly

You hear a chattering or “jumping” noise as the window travels up or down

The fuse (or circuit breaker) for the power window keeps tripping when a window switch is pressed

A window goes up or down in a crooked manner

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform A Window Regulator Replacement ?

To replace a window regulator, a technician will:

  • Remove the inner door trim panel
  • Disconnect the wiring to the regulator motor (in vehicles equipped with power windows)
  • Loosen the bolts holding the glass to the regulator and remove the glass
  • Unfasten the window regulator from the door frame and remove the regulator
  • Install the new regulator, reinstall the glass, connect the wiring, and test the system
  • On some vehicles with automatic features, the window will need to be reprogrammed

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

How do you know if you need a window regulator or motor?
It may be difficult to tell if the reason for a sluggish or inoperative window regulator is due to the regulator mechanism itself or its motor. A window that moves slowly, is skittish, or simply does not move could be due to either a broken regulator or a bad motor. A technician can test to determine which is the cause. On some vehicles, a window regulator motor can be replaced without having to replace the entire regulator assembly; on others, it is not.
What happens when a window regulator breaks?
A broken window regulator will prevent a window from traveling up and down as it should. Sometimes, the window will fall into the door when the regulator breaks or otherwise fails to remain closed.
How long does it take to replace a window regulator?
The amount of time required to replace a power window regulator depends entirely on the vehicle make and model, since manufacturers include vastly different designs for their doors and windows. You can expect the job to take an hour or more.
