Head Gasket

The head gasket is a secure seal between the engine block and the cylinder head. They ensure the correct level of compression is felt by the engine cylinders and also protects them from coolant and oil leaks. Head gaskets are built to withstand high amounts of pressure but may fail due to engine overheating, deterioration, or incorrect installation.

Signs of a bad head gasket

Head gasket maintenance

If you notice any of the above signs, get your engine inspected by a car care professional right away. Head gasket failure is usually the result of a serious engine problem and getting a head gasket replaced is typically quite expensive. A fair amount of labor is involved in getting a head gasket replaced which is where the majority of the high price will come from. Any other engine issues should be addressed first before attempting to replace the head gasket. In cases of serious engine damage, the entire engine may need to be replaced, at which point you may want to consider if the repair is worth it or if you’re better off scraping your car.
