THE IMPORTANCE OF An Exhaust Manifold Gasket Replacement

What is an exhaust manifold gasket and how does it work?

An internal combustion engine, such as the one found in an automobile, relies on the rapidly expanding gasses produced by burning fuel to propel the pistons and produce power. The process of combustion, however, carries some unwanted byproducts in the form of harmful emissions, heat, and noise. Therefore, an engine is fitted with an exhaust system to quiet down the sound of the engine and to route the engine exhaust away from vehicle occupants. The exhaust manifold gasket is a component of this system.

Your engine can produce exhaust upwards of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That exhaust also contains compounds harmful to humans and the environment, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides. The exhaust system collects these hot gasses in the exhaust manifold as they exit the engine’s cylinders. From there, the exhaust passes through pipes to the catalytic converter and ultimately to the muffler and out of the tailpipe at the rear of the vehicle.

The exhaust manifold is a large metal chamber or collection of chambers bolted directly to the engine cylinder head. Sandwiched between the manifold and the engine is a gasket, the exhaust manifold gasket, that prevents gasses from escaping the exhaust system at that junction. The gasket can be made of heat-resistant fiber, ceramic, graphite, asbestos, or steel.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs a new exhaust manifold gasket?

Signs of a bad exhaust manifold gasket are often obvious. Its job is to seal the exhaust system at the point where it connects to the engine in order to prevent leakage of exhaust gasses and to reduce engine noise. Problems with the exhaust system, such as too much oxygen entering the system, can also cause engine performance problems. So, if the gasket fails, you will likely notice one or more of the following:

Excessive engine noise coming from the front of your vehicle when the engine is running

Smoke originating in the engine compartment

The smell of exhaust fumes near the front of the vehicle or under the hood

A puffing sound coming from around the exhaust manifold

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION

How does a technician perform An Exhaust Manifold Gasket Replacement ?

The procedure to replace an exhaust manifold gasket can vary in complexity a great deal depending on the vehicle make and model - how the engine is oriented or how many other components must be removed for access. The mounting hardware for exhaust components, including the exhaust manifold, are also subject to a good deal of stress and degradation from heat and corrosion, making them difficult to remove.

To replace the exhaust manifold gasket on an engine, a technician will take the following general steps:

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal
  • Remove any shields, guards, covers, or ducts necessary to gain access to the exhaust manifold
  • Detach any screws or fasteners holding the exhaust manifold to the engine and pull the manifold away from the cylinder head enough to remove the gasket
  • Remove the old gasket and insert a new one in its place
  • Reinstall the manifold bolts
  • Reinstall the shields, guards, covers, and ducts that were removed for access
  • Reconnect the battery and start the engine to verify the repair and check for exhaust leaks Some vehicles require that the technician partially remove or shift the engine on its mounts to allow the exhaust manifold to travel enough to access its gasket. With such cases, the procedure is more complex.

OTHER QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ASK

Is it hard to replace an exhaust manifold gasket?
The process required to replace an exhaust manifold gasket can vary a good deal depending on the specific engine configuration and orientation in a vehicle. With some, a significant amount of other components must be removed for access, and sometimes the engine itself must be dislodged from its mounts and moved in order to create enough space to move the manifold. And manifold bolts are often difficult to reach. In many cases, the job is made more difficult due to the susceptibility of exhaust hardware (including exhaust manifold bolts) to corrosion. When this service is done by someone other than a trained technician, it often results in bolts broken off inside the engine.
Can I drive with an exhaust manifold gasket leak?
Operating a vehicle with a bad manifold gasket is not recommended. The engine will still run, but the extremely hot gasses that escape from around the manifold can melt wires or other components (even fuel vapor lines) and cause a fire or other damage. Leaking fumes that are harmful to humans can also enter the passenger compartment. Engine performance can also become a problem, as can increased engine noise.
How long do exhaust manifold gaskets last?
The exhaust manifold gaskets used in many older vehicles were often made of a fibrous material that tended to shrink and degrade over time. In those cases, it was not uncommon for a manifold gasket to need replacement well under 100K miles. Today, however, engines feature “MLS” (multi-layer steel) gaskets for the exhaust manifold. These newer materials are routinely found to last the lifetime of a vehicle under normal driving conditions.
