What is an intake air temperature sensor and how does it work?

An intake air temperature sensor is a device that detects the temperature of the air after it passes through the engine air filter and before it enters the engine. Air temperature affects its density, and air density affects how much oxygen it holds. The intake air temperature sensor helps your vehicle to run well whether you are driving in subzero temperatures or through the tropics.

The engine in your vehicle needs a constant supply of both air and fuel in order to operate, and it needs them in a specific ratio. Years ago, engines were fitted with carburetors that included a lot of mechanical components that were designed to precisely meter the air and fuel but were prone to malfunction. And carburetors were not very good at adjusting the air to fuel ratio to accommodate varying conditions, such as ambient temperature swings or changes in altitude.

Instead, vehicles built since the mid 1990s have featured electronic fuel injection, or EFI. Relying on fuel injectors to atomize fuel inside the combustion chambers, EFI goes far beyond the capabilities of a carbureted engine. This system uses the engine’s main computer, the Engine Control Module, or ECM - alternatively known as an Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) - to control the ratio of air to fuel injected in the engine. Data received from an array of engine sensors is continuously monitored and analyzed by the ECM so that changes can be made no matter what the driving conditions might be. One of those sensors is the intake air temperature sensor.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

How do I know if my vehicle needs a new intake air temperature sensor?

The intake air temperature sensor detects the temperature of the air entering the engine, and reports that value back to the ECM so that the proper amount of fuel can be sent to the injectors. Although the intake air temperature sensor is not typically exposed to high temperatures, it is mounted in the engine compartment and does experience vibration as well as varying levels of moisture while the vehicle is in operation. This eventually causes the sensor to fail, which can lead to any of the following conditions:

Rough engine idle

Your vehicle shakes due to a rough running engine

Reduced fuel economy

Failed emissions test

HOW IS THIS SERVICE PERFORMED?

How is a an Intake Air Temperature Sensor Replacement done?

Intake air temperature sensor replacement is not necessarily a complex repair. It does, however, require accurate diagnosis, often in the form of a reading with a digital scan tool and interpretation of the associated trouble codes. To replace the intake air temperature sensor, a technician will likely take the following steps:

  • Remove any shields, guards, covers, or ducts to gain access to the intake air temperature sensor
  • Disconnect any wiring attached to the sensor
  • Remove the fastener holding the sensor in place and remove it from its mount
  • Insert the replacement sensor
  • Reconnect the wiring
  • Reinstall the shields, guards, covers, or ducts that were removed
  • Verify operation of the new intake air temperature sensor with a scan-tool and reset the check engine light

Other questions customers ask

Where is the intake air temperature sensor located?
The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor is usually located somewhere in the air intake duct (boot) that leads to the throttle body mounted on top of your engine. Alternatively, the sensor could be mounted in the air cleaner housing or even in the intake manifold.
How do you reset an air intake temperature sensor?
A technician will not typically need to “reset” an intake temperature sensor. It may be necessary, however, to reset the check engine light by removing any diagnostic trouble codes that were triggered by a bad intake temperature sensor. Such a reset is done with a diagnostic scan tool connected to the OBD II data port in your vehicle.
What causes an intake air temperature (IAT) sensor to fail?
There are several problems that can lead to a faulty intake air temperature sensor. For instance, the tip of the sensor could become fouled. The sensor could suffer mechanical damage or become short circuited inside. The wiring that leads to the sensor could also become damaged and create an electrical short in the sensor circuit.
