Electrical and Lights
Your car’s electrical system refers to all of the components responsible for the starting and lighting of your car, as well as any vehicle computers used to control various functions. Below is a brief overview of the components that make up your car’s electrical system:
- Alternator – the alternator is the center of your car’s electrical system. It is responsible for providing electricity throughout the electrical system and also for keeping your car battery charged. The alternator produces significant amounts of power and electricity to keep your car running, so when it breaks down, your car will often be inoperable.
- Starter – the starter draws power from your car’s battery to ignite the engine on startup. When you turn the ignition key or push the engine start button, the starter leverages the electrical current from the battery to engage the engine’s flywheel which starts your car.
- Ignition switch – the ignition switch sends signals to your starter that tell it to ignite the engine as you turn your key in the ignition lock cylinder of your car. Likewise, when you turn the car off, the ignition switch will cut the power going to your engine to shut it off.
- Battery – Your car’s battery stores the electrical charge needed to power your vehicle and its accessories as well as start the engine. It is also a source of backup power for when your alternator cannot meet the electricity demands of your vehicle.
